These wonderful letters were given to The Village Museum by Clara Hale's daughter, Mariclaire Hale.  The letters document the lives of the Hale Family, newly arrived to the Village in 1934.  Mr. Hale supervised a United States government acquisition survey force of twelve men. They were sent to survey the 400,000 acres of the Wambaw purchase unit, a large part of which was within the boundaries of Hell Hole Swamp.

When Mr. Hale brought his young wife Clara, and their small son John to the Village there were no apartments or houses to be had.  such, they had to rent a room from Mrs. Graham, where they shared the only bathroom with 16 or 18 men.
