Charleston, a living museum of Southern culture, is famous for its charm, Lowcountry cuisine, unique architectural stylings, and leisurely pace of life. A side of Charleston that many tourists do not witness and explore, the African-American community is a vibrant part of the Charleston identity, having shaped the Holy City's very essence since the days of slavery.
In Charleston, South Carolina, authors John Meffert and Sherman Pyatt, on behalf of the Avery Research Center, have compiled a historical celebration, in word and image, of the black community that shares a wide range of the African-American experience, ranging from local education, industry, and culture to life as it was during Reconstruction and the Civil Rights era. This visual history will be a treasure for any Charlestonian's library.
