For decades, David Doar's 1907 address to the Agricultural Society of St. James-Santee has served as a history of the St. James-Santee Parish. It is considered one of the most detailed accounts of the early years of the parish and of the beginnings of the village of McClellanville. In his reminisences he brings to mind the "Great Society" created by the industrious rice planters of the Santee, and tells of its passing away. He offers the reader a glimpse at the harsh years that followed the Civil War and recollects how people managed to survive after such an economic tumble.
